Egbe Egungun of Oyotunji African Village

The ancestor society in the Yoruba tradition is called “Egbe Egungun”.  Egungun is the masquerade of one’s ancestral lineage. Egbe means group or collective. Each member of Egbe Egungun is a priest responsible for the caretaking of the ancestors worship, facilitation, maintainance and veneration. The Ancestor priest is the custodian of the ancestral customs and traditions. Yoruba culture is centered around ancestor worship. Each life cycle ritual involves the ancestors. Every ritual dedicated to the ancestors requires
members of Egbe Egungun. Many orisha (Yoruba Pantheon) temples such as Oya and Shongo request assistance from
Egbe Egungun. All Egungun Priest has to be proficient in the facilitation of the Ancestors.
